Round Up: Heroic Drivers Awarded, A Call for Higher Wages and More

Two school bus drivers for the Camas School District were honored for their acts of heroism in keeping students safe during two reckless driving incidents that could have turned deadly. In both instances, the pair prevented severe bodily harm to students through their quick judgment, astounding skill, and keen sense of impending danger. Both claimed they were just doing their jobs.

A number of school district bus drivers in the southern Texas gathered to call for higher wages. The group of more than 80 Brownsville Independent School District employees expressed concerns of low pay, low hours and lack of summer employment to the district superintendent. The drivers reported they have not received a raise in over five years.

Authorities have charged a Fort Worth bus driver on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was found behind the wheel of a bus that had gotten stuck in a muddy median, his blood-alcohol level well over the legal limit. Police arrived at the scene after responding to the call in the middle of the night, witnesses saying a bus was driving erratically. The driver claimed he had gotten lost after dropping off a wedding party at a location and couldn’t find his way home.

Colorado students can look forward to a cleaner future as their school district invests in state-of-the-art school buses. District 51 in Grand Junction recently purchased 140 buses, 122 of them using alternative fuel. According to school administrators, these new buses use clean propane technology, which is environmentally sounds, will save the district money, and keep the kids safe by reducing sound population made by conventional diesel.
