District Reaps Benefits of Hosting National Special Needs Team Safety Roadeo

It’s business as usual at Frisco Independent School District in Texas, but just a few weeks ago the transportation department was busy hosting the 16th annual National Special Needs Team Safety Roadeo.

Among other reasons, Frisco ISD hosted the March 9 roadeo because of its close proximity to the Embassy Suites Dallas-Frisco Hotel and Convention Center. Interestingly, this was the school district’s first time conducting a school bus roadeo at its site. The roadeo was held in conjunction with the 22nd annual Transporting Students with Disabilities Conference from March 8 to 13.

“This was the first time for our school district to host an event like the bus roadeo, and we took advantage to learn and meet new friends from across the nation,” said Transportation Director Douglas Becker.

Many Frisco ISD staff members volunteered as judges or assisted in support roles, noted Becker, who added that event was beneficial in helping to prepare many of his own drivers for the upcoming Texas Association for Pupil Transportation’s North Texas chapter’s school bus roadeo.

And since the TSD Conference was in Frisco ISD’s backyard, many transportation staff members took advantage of attending presentations focused on various aspects of transporting students with special needs.

“We had many good learning experiences and great opportunities in meeting with other transportation professionals and vendors,” said Becker. “On behalf of Frisco ISD, it was a sincere joy and privilege to host the National Special Needs Team Safety Roadeo. In our estimation, the event was a success.”
