School Bus Driver Saves the Lives of 20 Children During Bus Fire

The Daily News reported that a Maryland bus driver is being called a hero after she ushered 20 elementary school children to safety when her vehicle went up in flames Monday.

All 20 children, students from Glen Arden Woods Elementary School, escaped without injury, said Prince George’s County Fire officials. A witness reported that the driver, Renita Smith, helped lead all the kids to safety.

“It’s my job to save them,” Smith told bystander Fazlul Kabir, who posted about their interaction on Facebook. “I am a mom of two kids.”

Kabir said Smith refused to leave the bus until she knew each kid was out safely.

It’s unclear what started the blaze. Fire officials are still investigating. Dramatic video showed black smoke billowing from the blazing bus, which was pulled over on a suburban street in College Park.
