School Bus Maintenance Expert Weisinger to Retire

Brian Weisinger, the 2009 STN Leadership Award Winner who is widely respected in Texas and nationwide for his school bus knowledge, announced he is retiring this month as director of transportation at Spring ISD outside Houston.

Weisinger told STN via email on Thursday that he is set to retire from the district on Jan. 30 after 16 years there. In addition to receiving STN’s 2009 Leadership Award at the NAPT Summit in Louisville, Kentucky, Weisinger was a repeat presenter at the STN EXPO.

He is a past president of the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation as well as the TAPT Gulf Coast Chapter. Weisinger is also active on the Texas state school bus specification committee, where he will remain involved, he told STN.

Jackie Fields, who was TAPT president in 2009 when Weisinger won the leadership award, said, “I don’t know how many years he’s going to continue to do this, but Texas is very fortunate to have Brian be the chairman of the committee. Buses will continue to move forward as long as he remains in that position.”

Weisinger said he is looking forward to continuing to represent Texas as a delegate at the upcoming 16th National Congress on School Transportation in Des Moines, Iowa in May, as well as working with the NAPT America’s Best School Bus Inspector and Technician Skills and Training Competition.

While Weisinger will be nearing month two of retirement when the Transporting Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers National Conference kicks off March 20 in Frisco, Texas, he said he’ll be there with wife and TSD presenter Marisa Weisinger to once again help judge the Special Needs Team Safety Roadeo.

Brian started in the industry in 1978 as a school bus mechanic at Clear Lake ISD near Houston. Three years later he was hired at Friendswood ISD, and for the next 19 years, he served in various roles, including lead technician, shop foreman, transportation supervisor and acting director. In January 1999 he joined Spring ISD as the district’s shop foreman and then became the assistant director. He took the director reins in 2001 when Marcia Edge retired.
