Even in 2011, Ignorance Still Rears its Head as Seen by Driver E-mail

I know there are still many people who have a backwards view of others, whether they be of a different race, religion or sexual preference, but sometimes a person’s ignorance astounds me, especially during African American History Month.

In South Carolina this week, a bus driver for Fort Mill School District was fired after forwarding an e-mail that two of the 10 people she sent it to found to be racially offensive. The text included a picture of a noose and a message that read: “I called Fisher Price and asked if they had black swing sets. They sent me this one. Sweet.”

The driver, who was fired after 11 years working for the district, stated, “I sent it to 10 people, and nobody said nothing except two ladies.” Aside from using poor grammar in her response, those “two ladies” happened to be African-American drivers for the district. But what about the other eight recipients of the text? Why would anyone find that funny?

True, from time to time there is some humor that we all may find humorous that others might find offensive. But this is crossing a “big line,” one not only in regard to on-the-job behavior but one that marks one of the worst eras in American history.
