Roundup: A Bus Loses Its Back Tires, a Fight Between Driver and Student and More

A freak accident that left schoolchildren rattled could have been a lot worse when a Philadelphia school bus lost its two back tires en route to school. “She sent me a picture of a tire on the ground, and I said, ‘What is that?’ and she says, ‘That’s our schools bus tires. They both fell off,'” said one mother whose daughter shared photos taken of the incident. Another bus was called, transporting the students safely to school.Parents now want answers from the school district about how this could happen. The district is investigating and questioning the third party contractor. However, the district says a bus losing its tires has never occurred before.

A Virginia school bus driver is accused of attacking a middle school student. Surveillance video on the bus shows wrongdoing on both sides. The student reportedly acted inappropriately before the driver pulled over and the situation turned physical. Cell phone video shows the driver hitting and choking a 12-year-old boy while students scream in the background. The boy can be seen hitting the driver back. “That’s pretty, pretty messed up. It looks bad, it looks really bad,” said a parent. “I mean by looking at it, I mean, no, he doesn’t need to put his hands on the child but it also looked like he was trying to protect himself from the child swinging at him.” The 58-year-old driver has been charged with misdemeanor assault.

A Washington state school bus driver stopped the bus after being confronted by an 11-year-old student who reportedly threatened the driver with a knife. The student wanted to exit the bus prior to the planned destination. Police officers later located the knife and identified the student. There were no injuries reported.

A man accused of sex trafficking a 16-year-old girl was employed by Prince George’s County Public System as a bus driver. His employment lasted from June 2015 until February 2016. Montgomery County Police have charged two men, Raleigh McClam and Saivon Sharpe, with multiple criminal counts of human trafficking and sex abuse of a minor. Detectives claimed that Sharpe met the teen and offered her a gig that could generate pay of up to $750 per night. Upon accepting the proposal, Sharpe allegedly provided the girl with prostitution coaching, a cell phone and a strict billing schedule: $80 for 15 minutes, $180 for 30 minutes, and $350-400 for two hours. Sharpe allegedly took the teenage girl to five hotels across the D.C. metro area. As a bus driver, McClam earned $19 an hour.
