While politicians, the media and the general public struggled to make sense (if that’s even possible) of the weekend shooting that critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, killed six and wounded a dozen others, we are reminded that “crazies” everywhere intent on destruction don’t care who they harm.
The incident on Jan. 8 in a Tucson, Ariz., shopping mall parking lot reminds us all and especially school bus operators to remain vigilant. It’s nearly impossible to anticipate a tragedy like the one that occurred over the weekend, much like it was nearly impossible for a Houston school bus driver to anticipate another apparently distrurbed person step in front of the oncoming school bus last week in an attempt to commit suicide.
I guess nothing surprises us anymore, as blogger John Farmer maintains, but we can all be as prepared as possible.
It’s nothing new that there are people out there who show blatant disregard for human life. And unfortunately nothing will change that. This extends to all walks of life, including school bus operations. So, we’re reminded how important it is to train ourselves, our people, our school children to know what to do when or if tragedy strikes. We can’t live in fear, but we can live more alertly. And we can live life to the fullest every day.
