Bendix Compressors Attains Standard Position on Navistar MaxxForce Big Bore Engine

ELYRIA, Ohio — Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, continues its market leadership position following a recent agreement with Navistar, Inc. The agreement makes the 360cc air compressor from Bendix CVS standard on International®’s best-selling engine platforms, the MaxxForce® Big Bore 11- and 13-liter engines.

Bendix customized the compressors to meet Navistar’s specific requirements for a side-mounted design. Typically, compressors are end- or flange-mounted. Bendix will deliver a side-mount crankcase version of the compressor for International.

Bendix has been leading the way in air charging systems since 1924, the year the first Bendix compressor was installed on an International Harvester Coach. Today, Bendix is the top supplier of compressors, air treatment components, and complete air braking control systems throughout North America. Fleets specify Bendix air charging systems more than any other brand.

“Bendix is a pioneer in air charging system design and development, and this agreement illustrates our continued leadership in the market,” said Steve Mance, Bendix vice president and general manager for the charging business group. “We are pleased Bendix was able to partner with Navistar to design a product that meets the OEM’s specific needs. We look forward to a continued partnership and future growth with International as both companies continue to lead the way in the commercial vehicle market.”

The air compressor is considered the heart of any vehicle’s air brake system. Its function is to operate devices in air brake systems and build the air pressure required for operation. The Bendix 360cc compressor is a single-cylinder compressor that is built in the discharge line unloader (DLU) style. DLU-style compressors pump continuously, unlike other designs that use an unloader mechanism in the compressor head to switch from a pumping mode to a non-pumping mode.

The MaxxForce® Big Bore engine is available exclusively in International trucks and is designed to achieve new standards for efficiency on the highway. The engine will be the first product International® will run off the assembly line in its new manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Ala.
