CLEVELAND – The School Bus Safety Company (SBSC) announced today that the company has completed the development of a completely new course – “Bullying Prevention on the School Bus.”
Bullying Prevention on the School Bus is the first-ever, professionally-developed curriculum created specifically to address the challenges school bus drivers face. According to SBSC President, Jeff Cassell: “Bullying is a huge problem among today’s youth and it often leads to tragic circumstances. Not a day goes by that you won’t find an article in the paper about this subject.”
The course is built on a blended approach to adult learning and features three DVDs, a Trainer’s Guide and a Driver’s Job Aid, summarizing the key issues a driver needs to know. The subjects covered are:
- Bullying – How do I recognize it?
- Bullying – What can I do about it?
- Handling bullying situations
The DVDs depict several real-life bullying situations and explain the difference between bullying and simple conflict. School bus drivers learn how to enlist the help of everyone on the bus to make it safe and bully-free. Because the drivers face away from the kids, bullies are essentially unsupervised and feel they can get away with their behavior. The course details, step-by-step, how the driver can prevent bullying and how to persuade kids who are being bullied, or who simply observe it, to report it.
“The driver’s main job is to safely transport the students, but with a little extra effort, they can also reduce the pain and suffering of kids who would otherwise be bullied,” said Cassell. “Children who are bullied live in fear, suffer from depression and have difficulty focusing on their studies. Sadly, there have even been cases where students have been driven to commit suicide.”
This is SBSC’s third module and follows the highly successful Driver Training Course, and Transporting Students with Special Needs already in place at more than 600 school districts.
Bullying Prevention on the School Bus is only $950 and can be used for many years.
