A film about recounting the true story of high school football player Harold Dennis’ recovery and rise to glory after one of the worst school bus crashes in history, has made its way to the Web.
On May 14, 1988, Dennis survived a crash that killed 27 of the 67 people on board after a drunk driver slammed head on into his church school bus. The crash resulted in Dennis was permanently disfigured but survived to marry the girl of dreams, play college football at the University of Kentucky and become an inspirational figure in his community. The Phoenix, directed by On the Lot runner-up Jason Epperson, tells that story.
The Carrollton crash resulted in the formation of MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and Kentucky passed a law that requires all school buses to have a total of nine emergency exits, which is more than any other state or even the federal motor vehicle safety standard. Other federal school bus requirements that were passed as a result of the crash include cages around the fuel tanks and flame-retardant seats.
The film’s Web site includes the trailer, other video, news stories about Dennis and more about the film and the filmmakers.
