Cummins, Zonar Partner to Expand Engine Diagnostics Reach

Cummins Connected Diagnostics is now available to customers of Zonar’s V3 telematics unit for immediate diagnosis of engine faults, the companies announced.

The tool, which was first announced in 2014 for the trucking industry and expanded in the North American market last year, is available on all school bus makes and models with Cummins engines dating back to 2007 and certified by EPA. A Cummins spokeswoman told STN that Connected Diagnostics provides limited features for earlier vehicle models with electronic control modules, but not all features are available prior to 2007.

All existing Zonar customers can also enable Cummins Connected Diagnostics on their school buses powered by Cummins via over-the-air updates.

“We believe that by offering the advantages of Connected Diagnostics through Zonar telematics, Cummins engine customers will be empowered with actionable data to proactively manage their engines and increase the uptime of their vehicles,” said Larry Jordan, chief product officer at Zonar, in a statement on Tuesday. “We see a large opportunity to help more fleets maintain a high level of fleet performance and safety while on the road through our Cummins relationship.”

Cummins explained that Connected Diagnostics uses unique algorithms to prioritize engine fault information and translate it into clear, actionable recommendations that are immediately sent to operations managers. Fleet managers can use the report to order immediate service or schedule service before a breakdown occurs.

“Offering even more of our customers access to Connected Diagnostics through Zonar’s V3 device, we’re able to deliver the information our customers need to avoid unexpected downtime and maintenance costs, as well as improve efficiencies across their operations,” commented Sherry Aaholm, vice president and chief information officer at Cummins.
