First Student Prepared for the Long Winter Months

With the frozen fingers of winter having a firm chokehold on much of the country, First Student has called on the nation’s students, parents and drivers to remember the importance of safety when out on the road.

The foreseeable future has forecasts reporting nothing but snow and ice for a large portion of the country. To tackle these conditions, First Student, the largest provider of student transportation in the country, has trained and prepared its bus drivers for the travel challenges that accompany the harsh winter months.

“First Student school buses are twice as safe as the industry average, and a key to our success is training drivers to be prepared for winter road conditions,” said Gary Catapano, senior vice president of safety for First Student.

Drivers complete annual advanced training on driving in adverse conditions, including snow, ice, rain and fog, to prepare for the challenges of diverse climates.

“Each driver is trained specifically to handle slippery roads to help ensure students are safe throughout the more challenging driving months,” said Catapano.

First Student has also compiled a series tips for students, parents and drivers regarding winter safety. Some of these include: don’t rush to catch the bus; bundle up; put down the phone; pay attention to weather alerts and school messages; and share the road with school buses.

The complete list of 12 tips for winter safety from First Student, which includes detailed descriptions and pointers for each one, is found on their website, firststudentinc.com.
