Grant Funds Available to Kansas Communities to Help Ease Implementation of Safe Routes to School

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announce up to $2,000 in grant funds for local communities to implement walk-ability and bike-ability checklists designed to help prepare a grant application fo fund Safe Routes to School programs administered through the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The mini-grant program is designed to help up to 20 municipalities identify unique local assets and barriers for implementation of practical strategies to increase the number of students walking or biking to school as their primary choice of transportation.

A spokesperson from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the checklists will also identify opportunities that exist in communities to take immediate action in setting priorities and moving forward to improve community safety for children until additional funding is made available.

The application deadline has been extended to July 15, 2011 to offset reported challenges with summer schedules.
