A new video enforcement program in place in Austin, Texas, has entered the ticket phase for motorists who illegally pass school buses.
Beginning Feb. 8, motorists caught on camera will receive citations in the mail. Last month, STN reported on the stop-arm enforcement program launch, a partnership between Austin ISD and American Traffic Solutions. Motorists enjoyed a one-month amnesty from receiving $300 tickets if they were caught on video blowing by school buses that were loading or unloading students.
During that time, 342 written warnings were issued from Jan. 7 through Jan. 25, according to Austin ISD Director of Transportation Kris Hafezizadeh. He added that the school district police department was in the process of reviewing at least another 105 alleged violations since.
An Austin ISD pilot program on stop-arm video cameras resulted in 60 illegal passing violations being documented each school day.
