Kansas Student Fatally Hit by School Bus

An 8-year-old girl was fatally hit by a school bus last week in Wichita, Kansas.

According to a local news article, the young girl identified as Harmoney Harper, was reportedly waiting for a school bus with her brother at approximately 7:20 a.m.

Police stated via the article, that the young girl walked into the street between two cars as a Derby school bus was coming down the block and ran her over.

When medics reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, they tried to save the girl. However, she died at the scene.

Cpt. Benjamine Blick of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said via the article, the two siblings were waiting for different school buses than the one that hit the girl.

Derby Public Schools Superintendent Heather Bohaty said in a statement that it is with great sadness she shared the news of the death of an elementary student.

“This student passed away in a tragic bus accident that is under investigation,” the statement reads. “We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our students”

Students and staff will be supported by additional social workers from schools across our district. She noted that due to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the district cannot release the identity of the student. Bohaty also provided tips and tools to help students during the tragedy.

A GoFundMe account has been made to help with Harmoney’s funeral expenses. According to police, no charges are anticipated but the incident is still under investigation.
