Maine School Bus Driver Is State’s Marine of the Year

While Americans over the Memorial weekend formally honored the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Richard Gordon, a driver for the MSAD 54 School District in Skowhegan, and a former Marine, in April was recognized for his dedication to a veterans detachment group.

Seventy-two-year-old Gordon is the adjunct paymaster for the Maine Leathernecks, a detachment of the national Marine Corps League. He and about 30 other former Marines make up the Maine Leatherbacks, which was established in 2010.

The group helps active-duty Marines and honorably discharged veterans in the state with disability claims and other needs. Gordon’s job as a paymaster is akin to the job of a secretary and treasurer of a civilian organization.

Gordon served in the Marine Corps from 1957 to 1961 and was in the reserves until 1963.
