North Carolina School Buses Eligible for Emission Reduction Grant Funds

The North Carolina Department of Environment & Natural Resources Division of Air Quality is seeking truck replacement project applications from public and private entities for $242,000 in diesel emissions reduction grants, and school bus operators are eligible.

Among those competing with school buses are city and county fleet vehicles, emergency vehicles, long-haul and short-haul trucks, refuse haulers and street sweepers. The applications are due Sept. 10, and all projects must be completed by July 31, 2013.

Applications must describe the new equipment, which should be similar in horsepower to the old equipment, and applicants must answer if the equipment is new or remanufactured. Hybrid vehicles are eligible.

Additionally, applications must describe “unquantifiable benefits” of the emissions reduction equipment and must include an itemized listing of all project costs, the projected life span of the equipment and a project timetable.

The Division of Air Quality said it expects to fund two to five projects. Awardees are expected to be notified later in September, and projects are slated to begin by November.
