San Bernardino School Shooting Leaves 3 Dead, 1 Injured

School buses were at the ready to transport students away from North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, California, after an apparent murder-suicide at the campus.

The San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said the male shooter targeted a female teacher, reportedly his wife, and injured students who were in close proximity to the special needs instructor before turning the gun on himself. An 8-year-old boy who was shot, later died at a local hospital.

“Police operations are continuing to secure the area. However, we do believe the threat is down,” said Chief Burguan in a tweet Monday.

The names of the two students had not been released at this report. Meanwhile, San Bernardino City Unified School District school buses evacuated students to nearby Cajon High School.

Maria Garcia, the SBCUSD spokeswoman, said the district reexamined security measures after the Dec. 2, 2015, terror attack that left 14 dead after two shooters, a man and his wife, stormed a holiday party at the Inland Regional Center.

“Especially after Dec. 2 we actually took a closer look at all of our campuses and what we can do to increase student security and campus safety. The majority of our principals have participated in lockdown training.… They know exactly what to do and what they need to do to keep students safe,” said Garcia to KTLA.

The SBCUSD twitter account asked parents and guardians to show ID when picking up their children.
