The state Department of Safety & Homeland Security changed its pupil transportation certification application process from a paper-based manual to a mobile and web-based solution to save money and reduce errors.
The new Tennessee Highway Patrol Pupil Transportation Certification application process by the department’s Pupil Transportation Division changes the way in which state Highway Patrol State Troopers administer the class roster and test results for active duty school bus drivers to hold an “S” endorsement on their CDLs.
As part of the endorsement, in-service training classes are conducted across 134 local school districts. Under the new process, troopers now use iPads that include information of all licenses with a prior history of “S” endorsements. They then scan each bus driver’s physical driver’s license with a portable scanner and validate the license against the endorsement database in the iPad.
Once each session is over, the results of the examination are sent wirelessly to the centralized repository.
With the previous paper-based system, troopers would send the roster and test results to the Division’s Nashville office. There, administration staff would manually key the entries into the mainframe.
Administrative staff can utilize the web-based component of the application by running reports, viewing and editing records and automatically generating necessary form letters.
The THP Pupil Transportation Certification application was developed by NIC, Inc., Tennessee’s eGovernment partner since 2000.
