Zonar Systems Introduces New 3G Telematics Platform

Zonar announced that it is making available to the industry a next-generation telematics platform that integrates data from the vehicle electronic control module (ECM) with satellite GPS readings and transmits the information in real time over 3G networks.

The new V3 replaces Zonar’s previous V2J on-board computer, or what a company spokesman referred to as the “brain” mounted on the school bus or other fleet vehicles. V3 is also the new baseline for the company’s telematics offering in all industries it services, which includes municipal fleets and military.

V3’s high-definition GPS tracking provides what the company called the first vehicle GPS system to capture latitude, longitude, time, odometer readings and fuel consumption. As a result, Zonar added that fleet managers can achieve greater location accuracy and more precise performance metrics. V3 also includes a new built-in, three-axis accelerometer that detects hard braking, hard acceleration and hard corning that can help to reduce crashes as well as Wi-Fi connectivity and an ultra-low power sleep mode.

The remote vehicle diagnostic systems instantly transmits engine fault codes to the maintenance yard, often before the driver even knows there’s a problem with the vehicle, Zonar added. And the 3G network works with Zonar’s Ground Traffic Control to transmit the ECM data, mobile device information and GPS readings over the network. Meanwhile, the GPS receive built into V3 features anti-jamming technology and low-power consumption as well as the ability to “instantly find satellites.”

“The V3 takes our comprehensive vehicle tracking and diagnostics solutions to a whole new level,” said Mike McQuade, chief technology officer for Zonar. “The best GPS receiver available combined the 3G speed and OEM quality make the V3 the new standard for fleet telematics. There’s not other system like it on the market.”

The company confirmed that V3 will be featured during the NAPT Summit trade show in Memphis, Tenn., this month.
