A Michigan student with special needs managed to get out of his child safety restraint system and exit his school bus via the rear emergency door before walking through traffic on a busy interstate, reports WXYZ in Detroit.
One motorist captured on video the student walking down Interstate 696 near Coolidge Highway as cars stopped. Another man is seen in the video trying to coax the boy, who reportedly is autistic, out of the roadway and to safety.
The teen avoided the Good Samaritan in the video but was not injured during the incident that occurred on Tuesday in Huntington Woods, Michigan.
Dr. Daveda Colbert, superintendent of Oak Park Schools, said a review of school bus video shows the boy trying to and then succeeding in getting out of his harness. She said the boy was secured correctly but that he needs a new harness.
She added that school bus contractor First Student has been instructed to provide a new school bus, aide and another adult to sit next to the teen. The previous bus driver and aide have been suspended pending an investigation.
