ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Twenty-eight superintendents have been chosen to fill the inaugural class of AASA’s National Superintendent Certification Program.
“We are delighted to welcome these talented individuals,” said AASA executive director, Daniel Domenech, in making the announcement. “The competition was tough. These men and women were chosen from a pool of nearly 80 applicants. They are to be congratulated.”
The program is a comprehensive professional development experience that offers exciting and relevant experiences to superintendents to sharpen their executive leadership skills. Spread over 18 months, the program is designed for superintendents who have been in the job five years or less. The forums, seminars, webinars, simulations, and coaching and mentoring provide opportunities to define and examine with colleagues issues that surface in real life, on-the-job situations.
The members of this year’s cohort come from 19 states, with district student populations ranging from 1,000 to 43,000. The average enrollment of a participating district is 8,000. The program begins with an on-site seminar, July 22-25, 2013, in Oceanside, CA, and will end at the AASA National Education Conference in February 2015.
A new certification program will begin in the summer of 2014 and will hold its meetings on the East coast. Recruiting for that program will begin this coming fall.
