Carrier Introduces Ultra Low Profile K-410 Condensing Unit in North America

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Aug. 24, 2009) – Carrier’s new high performing Ultra Low Profile K-410 roofmount condenser unit, designed to minimize the weight placed on the roof of a bus as well as reduce overall height, is now available across North America. The efficient K-410 unit, which was previously launched in Europe and Mexico, expands Carrier’s existing North American condenser product portfolio that includes a wide range of split system air conditioning units for small to mid-size school and shuttle buses. Carrier is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“Based on market feedback from customers who participated in field trials, we’ve made the K-410 unit even smaller and lighter than its predecessor, while maintaining the same level of performance and efficiency,” said David Oberdorff, product and marketing manager, Carrier North America Bus. “The K-410 unit is currently being applied in various shuttle, para-transit and school bus applications across North America.”

At 5.7 inches tall, the low height of the K-410 unit increases roof clearance and provides a cleaner, sleeker look to the air conditioning installation. The low profile and tapered leading edge of the unit eliminates the need to install a brush guard over a standard rooftop condenser.

At just 49 pounds, the lightweight design makes the K-410 unit a good fit for both conventional- and hybrid-drive buses. The unit is also performing well with several buses that use the Azure Hybrid Drive, a small bus chassis with a battery back-up.

By relocating the air conditioning condenser f rom the typical position under the bus floor to the roof of the bus, the capacity and operating efficiency of the air conditioning system improves because the system uses cleaner air from the top of the bus through the unit’s heat exchanger.

The K-410 unit uses non-ozone-depleting HFC-134a refrigerant and delivers a high cooling capacity (82,000 Btu/hr). It also is easier to install than its predecessors. The design specifications of the K-410 unit include a one-piece “drop in” construction to dramatically simplify and reduce the time it takes to complete the installation. In addition, the unit’s modular construction allows for improved access to internal components, making it easier to service. This translates to less downtime, which is critical for bus fleets operating on tight budgets.

Carrier’s Ultra Low Profile K-410 condenser can be matched with other Carrier bus air conditioning components to provide a complete air conditioning system that meets various vehicle sizes, operating modes and climates.
