Storm Damages Collins Bus Plant, Manufacturing Portion Intact

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A confirmed microburst thunderstorm struck the sales office portion of Collins Bus Corporation’s South Hutchinson plant in the early morning hours, but the damage will not affect the company’s production schedule.

“It wasn’t that significant,” said Collins President Kent Tyler. “It basically hit the sales office and damaged the roof.”

No injuries were reported. The western portion of the plant, where a majority of the manufacturing is performed, was untouched by the storm.

A microburst is a type of storm that descends as sudden gust of wind. Tyson Foods, other local businesses and an apartment complex were also affected. About 1,500 South Hutchinson and Wichita residents also lost power to their homes.
