The Colorado State Pupil Transportation Association handed out trophies last month for its 2016 Roadeo State Championship, held in conjunction with the Technicians Contest and the CSPTA Transportation Summit, and Colorado Springs and Douglas County led the way.
Robert Leach of Academy 20 School District in Colorado Springs won the Roadeo Conventional category. He was followed by Wanda van Zonneveld of Cherry Creek Public Schools in second place and Josh Gonzales, also of Cherry Creek, in third. Jeff Proffitt of Academy 20, James Lawrence of Adams 12 Five Star Schools and Denise Nelson of Widefield School District rounded out the top six.
The Special Needs division was won by the team of Chris Fritz and Syndi Sertich of Academy 20. Debra Combs and Nicole Heather of Aurora Public Schools finished in second place, and Charie Horne and Sara Lapen of Academy 20 came in third place.
The overall winner of the technician competition was Zach Davis of Douglas County, outdistancing Kurt Rosen of Colorado Springs School District 11, who came in in second, and Justin Beddow of Academy 20, who finished third.
In the “Best in Station” competition, Troy Doyle of Douglas County Schools won the “Written” exam with Beddow winning the “Mechanical” test and Bob May of Academy 20 winning for “Inspection.”
Theresa Anderson, a CSPTA trustee and roadeo coordinator, told STN that participants from Wyoming also competed to learn how to create their own skills and training competitions in their home state.
Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Thorton outside of Denver hosted the competitions on June 21.
