On Friday Cummins Inc. and its joint venture, Cummins Westport, announced they are recalling 25,013 natural gas engines. The engine maker said cold weather could cause a sensor to fail and result in an exhaust fire.
While no injuries have been reported, Cummins Westport has received two reports of flames arising from vehicle exhaust pipes.
The recall involves Cummins Westport Model ISL G engines made between Sept. 12, 2007, and Feb. 2, 2014, as well as Cummins Westport Model ISX12 G engines made from Feb. 19, 2013 through Feb. 2, 2014.
School bus OEM Blue Bird Corporation is among the companies receiving shipment of these engines, which are also designed for use in transit buses and fire trucks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that condensation in the tubes that distribute air flowing into the engine could freeze during cold weather. The resultant ice could interfere with the proper operation of the pressure sensor, potentially increasing exhaust temperatures or causing flames from the exhaust pipe that could burn someone or cause a fire.
