Guy Elmore passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 28 and was laid to rest July 1, his family said. The past president of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation was 73.
Elmore was the retired director of transportation for Byram Hills Central School District near the New York-Connecticut border. He served as president of NYAPT from 1992 to 1994, and was also the association’s longtime treasurer. In 1995, he won the Art Schock Award, named after the NYAPT Hall of Fame inductee for outstanding leadership and safety advocacy.
NYAPT said that Elmore was one of the original members of the Commissioner’s Advisory Committee on school transportation and had a voice in the implementation of new state CDL guidelines. During his term as president, NYAPT retained the services of Mike Martin to serve as executive director and lobbyist. Martin is now executive director of the National Association for Pupil Transportation.
Elmore also established a partnership with a drug testing provider in response to federal regulations, saw the establishment of the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute and created NYAPT’s first on-line “bulletin board” for members, a precursor of the current website.
A lifelong resident of Rye, New York, Guy Crane Elmore is survived by wife Meredith A. McConnell Elmore, brother Wayne W. Elmore, daughter Lynne Elmore Phy and granddaughters Christiane Catherine Phy and Kelley Meredith Phy. He was predeceased by his daughter, Christiane Marie Elmore.
Elmore was the the son of Olive Crane Elmore and William Elmore. He was educated in the Rye Public Schools and later graduated from Mitchel College.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. National Guard. He was also was a volunteer fireman and served as fire chief in the Rye Fire Department.
