The New York School Bus Contractors Association announced that the state’s school bus roadeo will be held May 18.
The 42nd Annual New York State School Bus Safety Competition will be held at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage, located about 30 miles north of New York City near the border with New Jersey. NYSBCA said 125 drivers of Type A, Type C conventional and Type D transit-style school buses are expected to participate in the written exam and the subsequent road course. The roadeo is promoted as a fun day focused on safety training but also a serious competition.
“Safety has always been and will always be the top priority of the school transportation industry,” said NYSBCA President Phil Vallone. “This annual competition brings together the top school bus drivers from New York and bus safety experts to share our knowledge, improve our skills, and increase the safety of our passengers.”
Winners qualify for the International School Bus Safety Competition sponsored by the National School Transportation Association on July 21 and 22 in Tulsa, OKla. Drivers who choose to pass on the International Safety Competition can instead participate in the New York Association for Pupil Transportation Safety Competition in Albany, N.Y. on July 13.
