Oklahoma District Seeks School Bus Drivers

The Claremore public school district doesn’t have enough bus drivers for next school year. Doug Smith, Claremore Public Schools director of transportation, is seeking at least four more drivers, reported The Daily Progress.

“It is a great retirement job,” Smith said. “We have a field trips board set up if they want to take field trips. It is just an extra paycheck.”

The process to become a bus driver begins with getting a driving manual from the Department of Motor Vehicles, or online, to study for the permit test.

After receiving a permit, drivers can contact Claremore Public Schools and start practicing driving a bus until the next available required class, held in Aspen, Okla. The class is 25 hours and covers a variety of topics, including safety, railroads, evacuations and routes.

“When I first got my license, I was told the only way to be successful is to like kids,” said Smith. “They are going to test you, see how far they can push you. Kids are going to be kids.”
