WJLA reported that a 7-year-old girl in Bryantown, Maryland, was hit by a passing vehicle after disembarking from her school bus and was in a medically-induced coma.
The incident occurred on Tuesday. The driver of a pickup truck did not stop for the school bus, which had its red flashing lights activated and the stop-arm extended. The truck hit Skyla Shirriel in front of her home.
The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with the police, WJLA reported.
The news report said this is a nationwide problem—and the stats are alarming. Last spring, 3,812 bus stop violations were reported by Maryland school bus drivers participating in a voluntary survey for the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services.
The figure is nearly a 13 percent increase from the 3,384 illegal passing incidents that were recorded in 2017.
