Navy Veteran Embraces Life as Transgender School Bus Driver

Marsha Morgan, a 55-year-old school bus driver from San Clemente, Calif., expresses the joys of being a transgender school bus driver.

Only a few years ago, Marsha was Marshall. Yes, she was a he.

Day by day, Morgan’s life started to get better. Being in the school bus driver’s seat didn’t only give Morgan direction.

For the first time, Morgan felt he could navigate life.

As a he, Morgan served two tours of duty in the Persian Gulf as a sonar technician on a fast-attack submarine. As a he, Marsha also was married to a woman.

Morgan is a certified expert bus driver and has been nominated three times by the Capistrano Unified School District for employee of the year, winning in 2005.

She also drives a mean tractor. That’s right. Mean is the only way to describe a 1948 Ford tractor with a steel seat and rear wheels big enough to crush a Smart Car.

In some ways, the 6-foot-2 Morgan still is a he. But that will change forever in April when Morgan will become Kaiser Permanente’s first Southern California gender reassignment surgery patient.
