Seattle School Bus Drivers Eye Strike

The Seattle Times reports that Seattle Public Schools bus drivers seek affordable health benefits and increased retirement plans from employer First Student or they plan to strike.

The Teamsters Local 174 represents 400 school bus drivers authorized a strike. While the drivers were still on the job at this report, a Teamsters spokesman said the strike could begin at any time, though added that as long as talks continue the drivers will continue working.

The union claims First Student promised to negotiated over health care last year, adding that many drivers cannot afford the insurance the school bus contractor offer or to contribute to their retirement.

While the school district said it anticipates the labor issue will be resolved, it messaged parents to monitor the district’s website and check their email daily for any changes to school bus service.
