Special Needs Students Spend Hours on School Bus

On Monday night, it took special needs students from the Sumpter School District in South Carolina up to six hours to get home, reported WLTX.

A spokesperson for the district confirmed that the last few students were dropped off at 8:34.

According to the report, drivers called in sick, and two routes were combined for the day. The bus left school at 2:30 PM and broke down nearly 40 minutes later. A mechanic arrived at the scene at 3:56 but soon realized that he couldn’t fix the bus. Another bus arrived at 5:30, but the wheelchair lift did not work, so students had to wait 10 more minutes for another to arrive. The last students were eventually dropped off at 8:34 PM.

“”It’s not uncommon for buses to break down, South Carolina has an aging bus system,” said the spokesperson.
