The Florida Association for Pupil Transportation congratulated nine local children who placed in the state’s 2011 poster contest, including second- and third-place entrees at the national level as chosen during the recent NAPT Summit in Cincinnati.
Fifth-grader Ricardo Aguilar of North Andrews Garden Elementary School of the Arts in Oakland Park and second-grader Jennifer Russell of Cypress Creek Elementary in Port Orange, Fla., were second and third in their respective divisions during the National School Bus Safety Week Poster Contest. Aguilar, a special education student, qualified for the national competition by winning Division IV of Florida’s state contest while Russell did so by winning Division I. Aguilar took home a $250 savings bond and Russell a $100 savings bond.
During the state competition, Tejasvini Mantripragada, a fifth grader at Cypress Creek Elementary, won Division II ahead of fifth-grader Traseanna Morse of Crosspointe Elementary in Boynton Beach and fourth-grader Rachel Loayza of Chestnut Elementary in Kissimmee.
Sixth-grader Steven Jia from Loggers Run Middle School in Boca Raton finished first in Division III followed by Grace Sauers, a sixth grader from Omni Middle School in Boca Raton, and Alecia Camp, an eighth grader from Jackson Heights Middle School in Oviedo.
Cheridian Kimbrell, a second grader at Glendale Elementary in Vero Beach, finished in second place behind Russell in Division I followed by Karolina Kuchta, a second grader at Chestnut Elementary. Meanwhile, second grader Amelia Dournax of North Andrews Gardens Elementary in Oakland Park finished in second place in Division IV and firth-grader Alexis Campbell of North Andrews Gardens Elementary, also in Oakland Park, finished third.
First place finishers in the state competition received $100 each with second place earning $50 in prize money and third place $25.
