Giordano Eyes Retirement as Las Vegas School District Eyes Successor for Transportation

Last year’s STN EXPO Co-Chair Frank Giordano signed off in an e-mail today with three words that summed up his impending weekend: Five more days!

The transportation director for Clark County School District in Las Vegas told STN that he will be seeking “new opportunities within the student transportation arena” in consulting or sales by September or October, after taking the summer months off to complete some home projects and to partake in some camping and fishing trips with his son, who is completing a college degree next month.

When he leaves his position next Friday, Giordano will have completed more than 30 years with the district. He started with the district as a vehicle mechanic in May 1982, and after a one-year hiatus teaching diesel technology at a local technical center, he returned to Clark County, quickly rising in the ranks as a diesel mechanics instructor, vehicle mechanic leader and garage manager.

He was named to head the district’s transportation department in 2009 after serving the previous three years as the director of vehicle maintenance and as a vehicle maintenance coordinator from 2001 to 2006. He oversees the transportation of 100,000 students on 1,500 school buses daily for the fifth-largest school district in the United States. He also indirectly supervises 1,800 transportation employees.

A Clark County HR spokeswoman said the application process for Giordano’s replacement closed Thursday, and she added that a screening committee will convene in the next week to determine interviews. She noted that the new transportation director is expected to be named by mid-May.

In the meantime, Giordano said his “farewell tour” has begun, as he visited the first of six district bus garages.

“Each yard is doing a little something for me,” he shared. “They liked me more than I realized.”
