Meet EPA Administrator McCarthy

Gina McCarthy was confirmed as EPA administrator by the Senate on July 18, 136 days after being nominated by President Obama to replace Lisa Jackson.

A Republican-led delay of her nomination centered on more than 1,100 questions addressed to McCarthy, who has championed efforts to address global warming, on “historic” overreaches by the EPA. President Obama nominated her in March, and EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe acted as the agency’s acting administrator.

McCarthy previously served as the assistant administrator of the EPA since 2009, leading EPA’s air and radiation office. Prior to joining the EPA, she was commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection for five years and also was the deputy secretary of the Massachusetts Office of Commonwealth Development in 2003 and 2004 and undersecretary for policy at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs from 1999-2003. She has a 25-year career in public administration and served as an environmental advisor to five Massachusetts governors.

McCarthy graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Anthropology in 1976. In 1981 she received a joint Master of Science in Environmental Health Engineering and Planning and Policy from Tufts University.
