School Bus Drivers Potential are Threat Identifiers in Ohio

Northeast Ohio credits and considers school bus drivers as one of the best resources in determining and preventing school shootings.

Dr. Stephen Sroka, public speaker and adjunct assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University, sat down and discussed with Cleveland 19 that school bus drivers often go unsung for their hard efforts of putting long hours and being undercompensated when ensuring their children’s safety on a school bus.

“Who’s the first person to see every kid every day?” inquired Sroka. “Who’s the last person to see the kid every single day? It’s that bus driver.”

In Alliance City Schools, reports indicate that a kindergarten student recently brought a gun onboard a school bus. The bus driver spotted the gun and notified authorities. No one was hurt.

Sroka said he believes that school bus drivers can prevent a school shooting. In a blog for School Transportation News earlier this week, he underlined the impact school bus drivers have on the children they transport. Sroka also indicated that they value their child passengers as family.

Meanwhile, Sroka said he doesn’t believe the whole responsibility should rest on the shoulders of school bus drivers with school threats but sees it as a collective effort with other school officials.
