School bus manufacturer Thomas Built Buses has redesigned its flagship Type C conventional, the Saf-T-Liner C2, as a commercial bus.
The company said the update includes enhancements to the exterior and interior design that make the school bus “particularly well-suited” for commercial and coach bus applications that require long-distance commuting. Thomas is marketing the new C2 to tour operators for use as city buses, university transit, shuttle buses, church groups and sports teams. The new C2 also features smooth sides without school bus guard rails and larger panoramic, solid-pane windows and optional coach-style recliner seating.
“We are no strangers to the commercial bus business, and we are excited to bring an updated look for the Saf-T-Liner C2 to the market,” said Ed Swaim, Thomas Built Buses C2 product manager. “There’s a real demand in the market from customers like universities, which want a modern-looking bus. The C2 is a very good value for a good looking commercial bus. And it’s a great choice for charters.”
However, the C2 is not new to commercial applications. Thomas said the updates were made in response to customer requests, which also drove redesigns of the EFX and HDX transit-style school bus models. Both have offered smooth sides and commercial windows for decades.

Pierre Bouffard, sales and marketing manager for Autobus Thomas, the company’s Quebec, Canada, dealer, received one of the first updated commercial C2 buses as a demo model. He added that feedback has been positive as customers are already asking about purchasing the new model.
