Former School Bus Driver Sues School Board Member

A former bus driver who claims she lost her job after repeated discrimination and harassment is suing the district and a New Jersey Board of Education member in federal court, according to the Newark Post.

Yvonne Fisher, who spent almost a decade driving a bus for the Christina School District, lost her job three months after an altercation with school board member Shirley Sutton-Saffer.

Following the Aug. 2014 altercation, during which Sutton-Saffer allegedly used offensive, racially-charged language, Fisher was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. She began to suffer from “severe emotional distress” and “severe anxiety,” according to the lawsuit.

Fisher alleges she was unable to do her job due to these disabilities as well as the continued harassment she received from Sutton-Safer following her on her bus routes.

Fisher’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from lost wages, emotional distress and benefits, as well as attorney’s fees and costs.
