School Bus Driver Traffic Violations May Become Public in New York

The number of speeding tickets a school bus driver has accumulated, or worse, may become public knowledge if a new bill in New York’s Senate is approved.

S7278, authored by Sen. Patty Ritchie, has been referred to the Senate Committee Education Committee. If the bill is passed and signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, it would amend the state’s education laws to immediately require the records of all traffic violations by school bus drivers to be provided to parents and guardians upon request.

The bill states, “A record of any and all traffic violations, as well as all offenses committed in the operation of a motor vehicle, of a school district’s bus driver, including those acquired outside the employment of driving a school bus, shall be provided by the school district to a parent or guardian of a student who rides the bus of such driver upon request.”
